Fishing at the Royal Hill Fishing at the Royal Hill

Fishing from the banks of the Severn at the Royal Hill is free for everyone camping or caravaning overnight on the site. It’s a tranquil location, where you’ll land salmon, chub and barbel, and be able to tell the story of your catch in the bar of the Royal Hill Inn afterwards.

Golf

There are several golf courses nearby, including the excellent Welsh Border Golf Complex at Bulthy.

 Cycling

NCN Route 81
Local route of NCN Route 81 - Lôn Cambria

The Royal Hill combines good cycling country with a tranquil camp and caravan site, and a handy pub!

The NCN Route 81 - Lôn Cambria cycle route passes our front door. We are surrounded by quiet, flat lanes. For those wanting easy off road cycling, why not try nearby Nesscliffe Country Park? For excellent and challenging downhill routes head south to Eastridge Woods or Hopton Wood.

Shrewsbury can easily be reached down country lanes via the NCN 81 (Cycle Shrewsbury). Oswestry is a pleasant, largely unspoilt market town and again can be reached down quiet lanes.

Walking

Linking Wales and England, the 337km (210 miles) waymarked Severn Way is the longest river walk in Britain, following the route of the Severn from from its source at Plynlimon to the sea at Bristol. The way passes through the Royal Hill Caravan Park behind the Royal Hill Inn. Why not hike here and camp overnight?

 Wildlife

Shropshire is renowned for its wildlife. Buzzards soar overhead and red kites cross over from Wales. Wetland birds abound, especially when the river is in flood (don’t worry the Royal Hill is above all but the most exceptional flood levels!). Lapwings are a familiar sight and the Holly Banks nature reserve lies behind the Royal Hill.

For a complete contrast, Llanymynech Rocks, Llynclys Common, and several other nature reserves lie on the hills a few miles to the west.

 Tranquillity

We are sited in one of the most tranquil areas of England, according to the Campaign to Protect Rural England. We are well away from any major source of light pollution and have great views of the night skies and the glory of the Milky Way.

 Canoeing

Why not arrive at the Royal Hill in style by canoe? And perhaps camp overnight? We have easy canoe access to the river and food is available every day at the Royal Hill pub (except Monday).
